∞ 87: Rooftops [action]

[Around mid-morning, Albert can be seen picking up small things in the plaza -- nails, pens, groceries. He doesn't often do this, but it's been a week since he gave Caesar the task of repairing the stable, so he finds himself inspecting and repairing the amateurish work. That requires a few extra building supplies. Might as well take advantage of how calm everything is with the New Feathers coming in, right?

Albert spends the afternoon pulling out half-bent nails and readjusting crooked wooden slats. He can't say that he's disappointed, since Caesar actually tried to rebuild the stable's roof, but he can have the opinion that did a really shabby job. Silverbergs were apparently not very good roof-builders.

In the evening, after dinner, he'll be found up on house 42's roof, having climbed up through the skylight. It's something he's never really taken advantage of, and yet there's something familiar about it. He remains out there for a good while, almost meditating.]

[Oh, Caesar knows what Albert is up to today. Of course, he wasn't sure if he was going to be expected to help or not, considering he kind of failed in the first place. So maybe a while after Albert starts trying to fix up his mistakes ~~as usual~~, he wanders outside to see how everything's going.

He doesn't give him a proper greeting, though. He just kind of yawns. He's tired.]

[Who's being a jerk now? Albert hasn't yet acknowledged Caesar, though he can probably see that flare of red hair out of the corner of his eye. He really doesn't want to hammer his own thumb.]

[He's not being a jerk. Yet. Caesar's actually not sure how he feels about all of this. Maybe not too bad, considering he didn't expect to do very well in the first place (he's a strategist for a reason, dammit), but... hmm.

What to do, what to do.]

Been up there long?

Since noon. [Albert doesn't turn around to look at Caesar, continuing to look down at the nail he's hammering.] Did you just wake up?

[That's quite alright. He's working, after all. Caesar tilts his head.]

A little while ago. [Maybe he sucked at it, but he was glad the work was over with. It was nice to lazily go about his morning routine in the afternoon again.] I wondered when you'd start doing this.

I thought I would wait until the wood had dried. [He stops swinging the hammer once he's finished with that nail, looking over his should at Caesar.]

I'm surprised you didn't sleep in more.

I can sleep more later. It's too early for a nap. [Even if he was still tired. He stretches his arms before he speaks up again. It's a dangerous question, but...] Is everything all right, then? Or is that roof a lost cause?

[And he stops to turn around on the roof, feet resting on the top rung of the ladder as he looks at Caesar.]

If it was a lost cause, I would be tossing the boards off the side of the roof.

Hmm. [A pause as he considers this.] I suppose so. You wouldn't have any reason to be polite about something like that. How long do you think it'll take?

Most of the afternoon. I should be finished in time to start dinner. [Yep. He intends to cook after this.]

[What. Why would you even-]

You're going to make dinner after spending your entire afternoon hammering away on that roof?

[dryly] Would you like to cook dinner then, Caesar?

Of course not. [Such an obvious answer.] But that doesn't mean I can't... I guess.

You guess. [He shakes his head.] The same way "you guess" you can rebuild a roof?

That depends. Should it be the same?

That depends. Should I be prepared to cook dinner even when "you guess" you can cook?

I know I can cook. I guess I can do it so you don't have to. [HUFF.]

Then perhaps you should make use of your knowledge for once.

That was the idea. I'm not sure if I want to anymore. [Jerrrk.]

You didn't seem thrilled at the prospect in the first place, so no harm done.

Of course I wasn't. It would mean I actually have to do something today. But I did offer. [You know. Unlike with the roof.]

[What. Albert saw no offer. Just a reluctant ... something.]

...In any case, dinner will depend on when I finish the roof. So if you want your dinner at a reasonable time, you should-- [~~stop bothering~~ ~~preoccupying~~ ~~distracting~~] --let me get back to work.

What am I supposed to do until then? Go back to sleep? [He should be okay with that, but somehow, he doesn't seem pleased.]

You sound displeased with that idea. [Totally hiding his amusement.] How unusual.

Because- [Yes, this is about the roof.] I don't feel like going back to sleep yet, that's all.
