∞ 97: Peace and routine [action]

[Things have been fairly quiet in the village with the draftees away on their escort mission. House 42 is especially quiet, with its lone remaining resident spending each day feeding his housemates' pets and then taking care of the horses in the nearby stable. It keeps him busy enough.

He gets around to opening Sheena's tea house around noon today -- later than the last two days he has gone in. He never spends a whole afternoon in the shop; perhaps a few hours a day, just in case anyone is curious enough to look inside. Kogoro stays with him in the tea house, usually content with chewing on a milkbone toy he found in the item shop. Albert himself taps away at his laptop at one of the tables with a cup of jasmine tea nearby.

If anyone looks for him on this somewhat cold day, he can be found at the stables in the late morning or the tea shop for the early afternoon. He is also available by journal.]

[Albert must be off checking on the water for tea, as the only response is a happy yip, following by the camera swinging and getting a nice view of paws and unfamiliar floor as Kogoro carries the journal away.]

[That explains it. That cheerful response, those tiny paws, and that snuffling sound all pointed in the same direction. His dog must have gotten a hold of Albert's journal. He smiles to himself.]

Good dog.

[...hopefully. Assuming that the journal was actually being carried to his brother like he thought.]

[The dog carries the journal as far as the kitchen doorway, dropping it there before scampering off to collect his bone. The journal is left alone for almost a full minute before shoes appear on the camera, and the book is picked up to reveal Albert's face.]

Caesar?

[Caesar is patient, watching the little images that appear through the journal. When he hears his brother's voice, he sounds quite pleased. Kogoro knew what to do after all.]

Hey, Albert. Miss me? Of course you have.

[Albert raises a brow, turning his attention away from the journal long enough to walk over and pull the kettle from the stove.]

How goes the campaign? [He'll just ignore Caesar's greeting.]

Not bad, I guess. The first few days were really wild! [He'd never been involved in warfare like that before, but it didn't take a genius to figure out that at home, it would be nothing like that. Like, at all.] It was a bit troublesome once the ships docked, but overall, not bad so far.

...Wild. [Was that really the emphasis that he wanted to provide?] Did you take any pictures of the Third Party's equipment? [Using the journal as he had done in the past, of course.]

No. There's nothing unusual about the soldiers. They're the same as always. Their boats aren't that impressive, either. They look like regular boats, except with giant balloons attached to them. [And he's not really impressed by flying boats. Would he really want pictures of that? Maybe he should look out for them in the morning or something.]

[So very dismissive, Caesar.] You did not think to inspect their boats, or salvage any materials or mechanisms that allow their boats to fly like that for study?

Of course I thought about it. [Briefly. Very briefly.] But there's nothing special about them. They're not even very advanced ships. Are you really that interested in seeing them?

[Albert's response is flat and unimpressed.]

Yes, Caesar. I would like to know what you are up against.

[Well, he could understand why his brother would want to see them given that this is actually a possibility, but... Eh. It's not like he wouldn't be out there anyway.]

Fine. Tomorrow, you'll have your pictures. We don't see too many of those jerks at night. There aren't a whole lot of those Shift Hunters out here, either.

Curious how they do not in the same numbers at night. [And even more curious was the whole idea of the cargo they were still guarding.] I'm sure the low number of Shift Hunters sets you somewhat at ease.

You can say that again! I was actually starting to worry about those things, but I guess we lucked out this time around. [Of course, he only saw them as a concern because his brother saw them as a concern. As long as he didn't get stuck anywhere by himself, he would probably be okay.]

Indeed. Your task is an easy one, and you have more than enough numbers for what you had to do. [Which either spoke to the importance of the cargo or the sheer amount of residents who happened to have shift compatibility at the same time.]

That sure doesn't stop them from doing anything stupid, though. Some geniuses thought it would be a brilliant idea to hijack some of those boats. Not only was it reckless, but it was completely unnecessary!

[Like, completely. With their numbers, the biggest problem they should have encountered was that storm.]

With the number of sailors out there, I cannot imaging them taking over more than one and manning it properly. [And then they would need to divide the able fighters.]

Not to mention that those people would be better put to use elsewhere. [But then again, his ship probably had the best crew there was, so he can't complain that much.] I'm just glad that everyone else could still handle themselves despite that mess.

Hn. Of course. They are versatile. You should know that by now. [This was hardly Caesar's first draft.]

I can't help but wonder just how "versatile" they are sometimes, you understand. [Boy, did he doubt them. Often.] A reminder every once in a while is somewhat appreciated.

Would you be somewhat at ease if they actually appointed generals and divisions?

No. There's no guarantee that they'd be capable! [He likes making those decisions himself. Even if he wasn't impressed by many potential "leaders".] It simply puts me at ease to see them working well together and not acting like total idiots.

Indeed. [So very brave, Caesar, saying such things while you are still sharing that battlefield with them.] Is that all for your report?

[Hey, he's just being honest.]

Yeah, I guess so. There isn't anything too unusual here. I can tell you all about it when I get back.

I'm sure you can. And there will be others to fill in the holes in your observations. [He turns his attention away from the journal again as Kogoro comes up with his milkbone toy, the dog standing up on his back legs like he wants to play fetch.]
