Is it really so random? Several people seem to have changed into something that shares a common history with them. Or are allusions to themselves in some way.

I meant the experimentation. We haven't had something like this for a while, or at least I thought so. It's like they decided to go back to the regularly scheduled programming.

Consider their latest changes. They have moved the barrier, made no attempts to reclaim those tunnels, and have shown no qualms with dropping those kidnapped in the desert.

I would say this is a sign of them having reorganized enough that they are comfortable to continue conducting experiments. The 'gifts' and Mark's precarious return were likely distractions to keep us from making further progress.
