His death was expected. I can't help but wonder if the environment quickened or slowed his death in any way; certainly the extraction method was different, but the deterioration afterward...

He will return. He was doubtful of it, but I'm sure he will return. How they stabilize his body without the Rune is another matter.

...I like how I find out my owl had owlets three weeks after the fact.

I don't mind... it wasn't as if I really had a destination, anyway.

Then I believe we have a destination now. Please follow me.

... All right. [She gives him a nod and steps closer once more.]

[It's still a slow pace through the forest even though they've changed direction. Albert clicks his tongue and looks around for the familiar little owl who invades his room all too regularly.

The little bird appears before long, divebombing into Albert's hair with little warning.]

[This action is very familiar, and yet very starling, so Raine gives a little startled jump, when the owl arrives.]

[There is a brief struggle to extract the bird from his hair, and Albert looks understandably disheveled as he holds the owl in one hand. After Rune twitters quietly to Albert, he flutters off in the direction they had been heading.]

Apparently the owlets are sleeping, so this may be a good time to see them without causing too much excitement.

[She can't help but smile faintly at that disheveled look, but she merely nods after he speaks.]

What good timing, then.

[Albert takes a moment to run a hand through his hair, though he doesn't take additional measures before continuing on their walk. It isn't long before they reach a tree with a woodpecker cavity in it. It's just a little over eye level for Albert, so he looks over at Raine.]

I suppose you can't see in there at the moment.

[Raine tilts her head back once the location is indicated, attempting to see if that makes any difference. No good. She looks back to him, nodding.] Mmm. You suppose correctly.

And since I have no intention of dragging something over here to provide support... I suppose I'll have to give you a boost up. [Considering he's already had to do this for someone else, it isn't too surprising. Sigh, short people.]

Oh? ... Thank you. I suppose I wasn't expecting it to be that high up, though it makes sense.

Mm. They are owls, after all. [He moves closer to the tree, cupping his hands together as he bends over slightly and looks at Raine. It's a bit reminiscent of how he would have to help her climb onto Astrid.]

[Something about that action pings something in the back of her mind, but Raine momentarily ignores it in favor of nodding and slowly stepping forward and then carefully into his cupped hands.]

It's just the right height for you to look in without difficulty.

Indeed. I feel privileged. [Except not really. It's more of a joke that he's made at Rune's expense.] Can you see in there?

[If Raine looks into the hole, she'll see a pair of [relatively] large eyes peering back at her over four tufts of grayish feathers. The mother owl's gaze becomes half-lidded warily.]

[After a small brief glance, Raine turns her head, lowering her voice.] I can.

[She turns her gaze back towards the hole, taking a better look. She favors the mother with a small, congratulating and appreciative smile, before turning her attention back to Albert.]

[After another few moments of looking, she carefully moves to step back down.]

[Albert brushes his hands together as he stands, glancing into the nest before looking back to Raine.] Mm. You're welcome--

[...And then there's a tiny owl on his head again.]

He seems comfortable up there.

[There's a grunt as Albert fights with Rune again, and he moves his hands away as Rune flaps his wings belligerently.]

He's convinced it's his territory.

His... territory. Where would he get an idea like that?

Past situations. He found his way into my room back when one of the previous residents was tearing through the forest, killing animals. After everything settled down, he never really left, unlike the majority of the animals.

And he... claimed your hair as his nest. Perhaps he feels safe there.

Or my head was the highest place in the room at at the time. [He sighs, then shakes his head. Rune flaps his wings to keep his balance, much to Albert's chagrin. He doesn't mind as much as he might visibly show, but he doesn't want the bird to get complacent.]

That too.

It's kind of ... sweet, actually. [She gives a soft chuckle as her gaze moves up to study the owl for a moment, though her expression slowly takes on that slightly distracted look once more.]
