∞ 65: Upon the smoldering battlefield [voice]

Status reports, everyone. Let's try to account for as many as we can.

If you know of any casualties or disappearances, please note them as well. They need to be kept track of in case the Malnosso decided to act while we were ... preoccupied.

Congratulations are in order. We've survived without losing the village. Now it's time to recover and aid the wounded.

If there are still any able bodies available, I would like a sweep of the perimeter done for any signs of the intruders. Feathers, clothing, armor -- if it's available, it must be studied.

...Please also be aware that the New Feather cycle, if it has returned to normal, will occur beginning tomorrow. Explain the situation to the best of your ability. Newcomers need to know that this isn't the usual state of the village.

... I will. [But she's all dirty and battleworn and damn it it's even worse asking for more help when he's already brought her all the way here. She starts to take off one of her boots. The other one is still too tight.] Ah... could you bring me a washcloth and a small basin?

And bandages, I imagine. [He looks down at Raine's foot, nods, and then leaves the room.]

... yes. [While he's gone, Raine succeeds in getting one boot off, then starts to work on the other one, which takes a lot more time due to the injury.]

[It's awhile before Albert returns, but he comes back with the requested items. He sets them on a bedside table, then kneels by her injured foot.]

You've had this wound for awhile, if it's swollen up this badly.

It's possible. I don't remember the exact moment it happened. Things were busy out there for a while. [She's cast some healing spells on herself, of course, but they haven't done too much for the ankle. One of those 'time' injuries.]

I see. [He frowns, glancing at Raine as he gestures at her foot.] May I?

[She's looking at her foot herself, bruised and swollen as it is, but looks back to him as he speaks and nods, slowly.] ... All right.

[And thus he begins to slowly ... peel Raine's foot out of her shoe. At least he has gloves on.]

[She curls her fingers onto the bedsheets, wincing, but watching. It's probably easier for Albert to remove it, given his angle and the fact that he's not the one wearing the shoe.] ... Almost.

[It takes a little more time before the shoe comes off, and Albert frowns at the swollen foot.

...And there's the disapproving look.]

[She's not sure what's making her wince more. The look or her foot.] ... oh. It's worse than I thought. [... really.]

And you think you can reprimand me for my moments of not taking care of myself when you allow these types of things to happen. [He continues frowning, though he prepares a washcloth and hands it to Raine.]

[She wants to wash her face first, so she starts with that, gently rubbing the dust away. She doesn't even know what to say. It's not worth getting into an argument over] ... So I'm just supposed to look the other way because it's you?

You're supposed to take care of yourself so you don't have these issues thrown back into your face. [He stands up, brushing his gloves together.]

[She finishes scrubbing her face with the damp cloth. Much better. She sighs.] ... yes, you're right.

You say that, but will you do anything about it? [A responsible, capable woman shouldn't be getting injured or sick every two months.]

[Raine lowers her head, quiet for a moment, under the guise of checking her foot for any signs of a broken bone.]

... I have to. There's still a long way to go.

Very well. [He doesn't believe you. Repeated failure does that.]

... [If he doesn't believe her, what's the point of even asking? She's just not going to look at him while he's making that face.] I need to put a cold compress on it. That should reduce the bruises and swelling.

[Hiding whenever she's in pain comes naturally to her. Sometimes she doesn't even realize she's doing it.] Hm? Sufficiently damp washcloths should suffice. Or some ice from the box in the kitchen.

[And out he goes to retrieve ... something. He needs to decide what to get.]

[After Albert leaves Raine finds herself letting out a low shaky breath that she didn't realize she was holding. She attempts to make herself more comfortable, easing off her robes and attempting to clean up a bit more with the washcloth. Distractions. She shouldn't be trembling. It's just a foot injury. It hurts.]

[Albert returns awhile later with both a small bag of ice and another washcloth. He glances at her a moment longer.] Is that all now?

[She lifts her eyes briefly to register his return, to look at the items.] Y-yes, that will work fine. Thank you.
