Everyone drafted out to Desset City should be accounted for by now. My gratitude to those who successfully worked together while we were out there.

I am sure there are residents and recent arrivals who may have questions about the situation and what we encountered out there. As longer-term residents may remember, we first encountered an army of cultists last autumn -- these cultists are referred to as the Third Party. The members of the Third Party, unlike us, have the ability to fly and Shift their surroundings. The scientists keeping us in this barrier, the Malnosso, drafted several of us to head out to another settlement.

We have been told that Desset City, the location we were sent to, was one of several settlements outside of our village. It was unlike anything seen within our barrier prison. The troops we met were an occupational force, maintaining patrols and one major base of operations that became apparent towards the end of our campaign. Despite the Third Party having a greater number of troops, we prevailed. The arrival of electricity and appliances coincide with our successful return.

Of note is the fact that draftees who initially refused were dragged by force onto the battlefield. These reluctant draftees were given less time to prepare, and included the likes of children. If you are drafted in the future, be aware that refusal does not appear to be a valid option. You will be taken and put to work, or you will be killed out there.

The New Feather cycle should begin shortly, so everyone should be on alert and maintaining their patrol schedules. This is especially important with the heightened amount of conflict in Luceti. Patrols should be properly equipped for skirmishes by now, so I'll forgo any other needless reminders.

[Considering it was raining out there, it was rather hard to get to work, so Ted's just staying indoors for today.]

Choices are starting to sound like formalities these days. [Still not happy with being dragged out there.] Hopefully they won't drag any more kids, but I doubt that.

It isn't surprising that they wouldn't give us a choice. We're already here by their whims; they have no reason to listen to us other than whatever vestige of morality they may have.

Instigate a bit of cooperation, maybe? At the very least, those who believe they have a choice are more willing to listen than those who don't.

... Hopefully people would keep that note in mind then. [He wouldn't doubt though, if some people were completely taken aback again if they found out they have to go no matter what.]

Because of the nature of the drafts, we cannot make plans until we know who will be drafted. And even then, another list of additional draftees was sent out awhile later. So the Malnosso certainly haven't made the tasks of organization and cooperation easy.

Not to mention the way they sent out soldiers on the battlefield just proved to scatter everyone even more.

Indeed. Having two-thirds of the troops restricted to their quarters to rest while the other third remains out on the field is simply ridiculous.

Do you suppose that's what will happen the next time around? [Not that he doubted it would happen again, just that he hoped that the Malnosso would try to change into more appropriate tactics.] I'd understand the need to bring people who are injured back, but taking turns in sending people out...

That would require understanding the objectives of the scientists who sent us out there to begin with. For all we currently know, the conditions could have been set in place to purposefully lower our efficiency. They did approximate how long it would take for us to eliminate the occupying force.

That's another strange thing. Lowering our efficiency could cost them fighters [Not to mention, even with last list of people, it was just chosen in a manner that was so random that it included non-volunteers and some non-combatants.] yet they want us to help them fight these guys off. It makes no sense to me.

It shouldn't be a surprise that they don't particularly care about our well-being beyond the fact that they can bring us back once we are killed. As long as we still serve the purpose they deem us necessary for, cost effectiveness isn't much of an issue. And that doesn't even factor in the newcomers that arrive each month.

Not to damper their faith in anyone's capability in battle, but the moment someone dies, it'll still take a week for them to revive the men. They must really put a lot of faith in everyone's individual capabilities in battle. [Sarcasm? Maybe. He wouldn't be surprised if battle was just another word for experiment outside the normal field, an experiment to see just how much limitations all of them could handle and still be effective out there. Either that, or they just really had no clue what they were doing.]

Either that, or they simply don't consider the battles out on the settlements high priorities. After all, they could have allowed us more troops to wipe out the occupying force faster, thus allowing the normal residents to return in a shorter amount of time.

But this was all an initial run. We will have to see how they react with this new information.

That's true. I was thinking they didn't want to reveal all their cards yet when they decided to send us out. There's definitely a lot of good fighters here.

Hopefully they have a better plan next time.
