∞ 84: Solace from time's passage [action/written]

[Today Albert is in the sitting room of his house, leafing through a few books idly. The weather is disappointingly rainy for summer, but it's a pleasant change from the heat earlier in the week.

Eventually, he will fall asleep on the couch. It was just supposed to be a nap -- half an hour at most. But that half an hour turns into a whole hour. And then two. (This may even repeat in his bedroom later on.)

Sometime later in the evening, he will write in his journal.]

Accomplishments could be said to be life's milestones. Some are far apart, and others are so close together that they may very well overlap. Some may be considered mundane, and others utterly unique to your circumstances.

If you are willing, I would like to hear of a mundane accomplishment. Something that others could relate to. I will share one of my own: I graduated from school as a teenager.

Hmm. [He doesn't answer right away. There was no harm in letting him know. He had just been evasive to see how Caesar would react.] I was dreaming of a long journey. The journey of one's life.

[Caesar, on the other hand, didn't think Albert would actually tell him anything, so there's a noticeable look of surprise on his face before he speaks.] Uh... I guess things were going pretty well, huh?

[You guess? Albert will refrain from focusing on your stupid questions, Caesar.] It wasn't overwhelming, looking at how much time I have left.

Oh? [There was definitely something relieving about that.] That's good to hear. That's the way it should be. Otherwise, that dream of yours might have been more of a nightmare.

Indeed. That in itself was surprising.

Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise, brother. I can see why you'd appreciate it so much. [He pauses, and you know that means he's going to say something stupid.] Sure you shouldn't go back to sleep? Might want to enjoy it while you can.

[He'll answer nonchalantly.] You expect me to go back to sleep while you're here practically taking over my bed?

Who's taking over your bed? There's plenty of room for both of us. [...wait.]

[dryly] Yes, as we've already experienced. [Remember that, Caesar?]

That's not what I- [Why was that so much more embarrassing now, sob.] That was different! A-and I wasn't even going to... Anyway, if you wanted me to leave, all you had to do was say so.

But you seemed so concerned... [You really make this far too easy, little brother.]

[This is something Caesar will never learn.]

I was! B-but that doesn't matter anymore since I see that you're just fine now.

[He smirks.] Yes. I'm just fine.

[And now he clears his throat.] I do hope that you have been working on your plans.

It's a little easier to think about now. [Maybe he shouldn't be admitting something like that to Albert, but it was the truth.] Like you said. Maybe by staying here, I'll actually get something done for once. [...] Maybe.

Maybe. [Albert raises his brow skeptically.]

Most likely. Anyway, I told you before, didn't I? It's my problem, not yours. It's not something for you to concern yourself over - I've got it covered. [...mostly.]

I will concern myself over it as long as you continue giving me reason to be concerned. [That is, he will be concerned until everything is finished.

He stands up. If he doesn't stand, he feels like he's going to fall back on his bed again.] It's taking them so long to announce the draft.

This is why you will never have such comforting sleep! [He's teasing, of course, because he knows there isn't much he can say to make him think otherwise. At least, with Albert's recovery, he wouldn't have to worry about him getting completely anxious over the whole thing.]

No kidding. Some of that information's going to be useless to us by the time they finally do say something.

Indeed. And we don't even know if they will replace those who have disappeared. It could be too much of trouble for them.

Don't say things like that. You'll certainly jinx me! [Though, he was thinking the same thing.] But I'd like it if they got things straightened out soon. I just want to get this over with already.

So everyone can go back to waiting for three or four months. [But he understood what Caesar was talking about.]

It isn't like we have a choice. But the sooner we're done with this, the better. I never wanted anything to do with it in the first place. [Which seems incredibly contrary to his behavior the last time there was a draft. Oops.]

You seemed so prepared to show off your skills.

Huh? Not even close. You must be remembering wrong.

Not at all. [He just shakes his head, walking over to his dresser.] Now. What were you doing before you decided to come in here?
