∞ 92: Warming weather [action]

[He didn't send out an announcement of any kind when they returned home. Others had already announced their dead and offered any words of encouragement or frustration.

Instead, Albert spent the days following the draft ... working on his flower beds. March had brought with it a warm spell, meaning that his seeds would be germinating and eventually sprouting. This is also the time for pulling down the dried vines from his trellises.

It's a lot of work (and a lot of garden), so he'll be out and around the house until late in the day. It's as dusk approaches that he can be found sitting on the porch, watching three tiny owls perched on the porch fencing.]

Why wouldn't I? I was the one who asked if I could keep him. He's relying on me!

[And he was sure that his brother didn't think he could do it. He wanted to prove that he could, to his brother and himself.]

...I'm surprised, too.

Oh good. Something we agree on -- your responsibility towards that dog is a surprise. [He pointedly looks away from the birds as he hears them twitter, glancing in Caesar's direction. But he doesn't say anything else, as he's still distracted by those darn owls.]

Yeah. [He rolls his eyes.] I'm also surprised you have that kind of patience to deal with a bunch of noisy little birds. [Even if they weren't that noisy. He walks up the rest of the stairs now and leans against the railing again. He's still watching the owls, but he notices that his brother seems distracted by them.]

I am not going to chase them off after they came all this way. [Even though he probably should, if he fears for the sleeve of his shirt. There's a brief pause before he continues in a slightly-less indignant tone.] I thought they were killed with the other birds, back in October.

Oh. That's right. [He'd forgotten about that. But it did further explain his brother's unwillingness to chase them away. ...besides the fact that he probably liked them a little bit. Probably.] Guess they turned out pretty lucky, huh? That's impressive.

Considering they lost a sibling and their mother, yes. Lucky. [He snaps his attention back to the birds when he feels a pinch; Rune is digging his talons into his arm. Finally annoyed, Albert shakes his arm and lets the birds flutter on back to the porch railing.]

[He snorts when his brother finally shakes his arm. Since he'd been fine with them sitting there until just now, it's not hard to guess what might've happened.]

As long as Rune's around, I suppose that we'll be seeing a lot of these guys. No wonder they're making themselves comfortable.

Hardly. They are old enough to live on their own. [He sounds very displeased by the notion.] Would you like it if I invited all of Kogoro's puppies to stay around? [...Hypothetical puppies.]

[...]

I said I'd take care of this dog, not a bunch of his puppies. [So it would totally be Albert's problem and not his.] And anyway, Rune isn't really your pet. They're more like old friends coming to visit. Or something.

[Old friends that perch on your arm. And in your hair.]

If Rune wishes to see his brood, he can go live with them out in the forest again. [This is as much said to Caesar as it is to the owls. Albert stands, his path showing he intends to leave the porch.]

[Caesar stands up straight, glancing at the owls before looking at his brother.]

Where are you going?

I'm going to put a few things away. [Meaning he had not put away all of his gardening tools. So he heads around to the front of the house, disappearing into the growing dark.]

[He frowns a bit. Hopefully, it wouldn't take too long. Caesar had other things he wanted to do. He doesn't follow him yet, but he calls out to him.]

Uh... Need help?

No. You can stay exactly where you are. [Albert snorts to himself, gathering his spade, clippers, and other tools that he can put into the stable/toolshed/far-too-large doghouse. He soon walks back to the side of the house, coming into view.]

[Well. He did say so. So Caesar will stay on the porch, holding out his arm to see if any of the owls will perch on him, too.

...at least, he'll do that before Albert comes back. Because that's embarrassing. When he does, Kogoro runs over to him, 'greeting' him.]

[The two siblings will just blink at Caesar, while Rune will hop on over and sit on the back of his hand. Because Caesar's cool, really.

Meanwhile, Albert sighs when he sees Kogoro coming at him, stopping so he doesn't threaten to run over the little dog. He waits for Kogoro to calm down just a bit, then continues on to the stable.]

...So many animals.

[Aw, Rune. He knew he liked you for a reason. Caesar smirks to himself as the little owl sits on his hand.]

Don't tell the others, but you're my favorite.

[...Kogoro, meanwhile, calms down, but continues to trot after Albert anyway. It's like he knows.]

[Rune will just sit on Caesar's hand, almost grumpily ruffling his feathers before tucking his head under his wing. Meanwhile, Albert manages to get the stable door open, heading into Kogoro's glorified doghouse to put the tools away.

He has a feeling Kogoro is following, but what's he going to do? He's nothing to worry about.]

[Caesar is completely okay with this. He rests his hand on the railing and watches the tiny owl while he waits. ...it's kind of fun.

Kogoro follows Albert right inside the stable. Surprisingly, his intentions are innocent. He walks over to a little area where there are blankets and food set out for him and lays down. He's actually tired.]

[...Okay, Albert is a bit surprised by how calmly Kogoro heads over and lies down, and he even goes over to pat the dog on the head once he's finished putting the tools away.

He heads out of the stable, carefully shutting the door behind him but leaving the top door slightly open so air and light can come in once the sunrises.]

Are you still entertaining the birds, Caesar?

What do you mean, 'still'? [Except that is exactly what he's doing. If they were inside and sitting down, he'd totally let Rune sleep in his lap again.] What are you going to do now?

[Albert folds his arms over his chest, approaching the porch to see what Caesar might be doing.] I had nothing else pressing in mind.

Good. I have something for you.

[...but there is still a bird sitting on his hand, and he's not really sure how to go about getting it off his hand. He looks down at the bird and kind of... well, just stares at it.]

[Since Rune has his head tucked under his wing, he's totally oblivious to Caesar's stare (or at least acting like it). Albert steps back up onto the porch, raising a brow at the sight.]

I do hope you are not talking about the owl.

Uh... No, I'm not. [Hmm. He knows he could just shake him off or something, but that felt... mean.] A little help?
