∞ 95: A quaint birthday [action]

[An early birthday dinner. That was what Albert had proposed, knowing it was likely Caesar would want to nap as soon as he was full. And so, with Caesar's Luceti birthday having arrived, there were light preparations for a quiet celebration. After all, Silverbergs were intensely private as it was, so there would be no invited guests unless Caesar himself decided to invite them.]

I can like desserts, Caesar. [He shakes his head a little. But he does understand what his brother is referring to.]

You can? Could've fooled me! [An exaggeration, of course. He's seen his brother eat sweet things before, gosh.] This wasn't a bad choice.

I'm glad you think so, since I had no idea it would taste like this. [He goes back for another piece of the cheesecake. There's a faint whine from the dog sitting at their feet.]

It's much better than plain cheesecake. [He'd never know that stuff like this existed if his brother hadn't suggested they try different kinds, so he was glad for that. He goes to cut another piece, too, while glancing down at Kogoro.] ...you make it sound like I don't feed you.

[Albert raises a brow.] Did you feed him before you collapsed for the night?

I hope you're kidding. [He eats the piece of cheesecake before deciding that, well, he might not be kidding, so he continues.] Of course I did. I fed him before dinner.

[But since dinner was early, it might have been a little earlier than usual for Kogoro.]

Of course I'm not kidding. [Kogoro does seem a little agitated by Caesar's answer, and he butts his head against Caesar's shin meaningfully. Albert ignores the dog's whining so he can continue eating.]

How could I forget? [Hasn't he been doing this too long to forget to feed his own dog? But when Kogoro does that, Caesar looks down at him and frowns.] All right, all right. I'll find you something before I go back to sleep, okay?

[...well. Maybe. He did already feed him today.]

[The dog wags his tail, apparently appeased by this promise. He sits on Caesar's feet, settling with watching the brothers continue eating the cheesecake.]

This may actually be a cheesecake I wish I had brought two slices of.

[Caesar makes a face before turning back to his brother and giving him a smirk. ...at least his feet would be really warm.]

Do you think it would be too late to get another one? [He may or may not be joking about that.] I guess you don't have such bad taste after all.

[Albert reacts with some mild sarcasm.] I suppose we could make a midnight run if you are in fact suitably awake.

It is my birthday. That would make it really memorable, don't you think? [He is eighteen, after all. It's a strange feeling to be able to say that. Of course, he can't keep up this joke for long, not when he's this content. He ends up smiling to himself again.] But I guess it's already memorable enough.

Indeed. You were woken up in the middle of the night to celebrate with dessert in bed. Unusual, to say the least. [He decides against eating more of the cake, figuring that eating too much would just keep him up even later.] I suppose this means you will be waking up even later than usual, though.

It's worth it, if you ask me. [He shrugs. He doesn't feel the need to stop eating just yet, so he takes another bite.] I had a great birthday.

And now you are 18. Strange, isn't it? This is your second birthday spent in Luceti.

Yeah. [He nods slightly, thoughtfully.] I never thought I'd be here long enough to see this day! But who am I to talk? You've spent more of them here than I have.

That is true. [Far, far too many.] But I had already finished growing before I arrived. [...Yet another height joke.]

...very funny, Albert. [He elbows him. It's not intended to hurt him, obviously, but... unnecessary, big brother. :|] I am almost certain that there must be something in the food that's stunting my growth.

[Because if he's grown at all, he definitely can't tell the difference.]

[Albert sways a little at the elbowing, but just keeps up the teasing.] Perhaps it's all of that soda you have been drinking.

Why does no one tell you that when you start drinking it? [He might actually be a little concerned!] I guess I still have some time left.

Not enough, I'm afraid. You may be doomed to your current height for the rest of your life.

Shut up. [Spoken halfheartedly. He really doesn't want to think of being stuck this tall forever.] Perhaps I should start wearing taller shoes...

Of course it will, but what else can I do? [...though truthfully, he's not that desperate. Unfortunately.] I can't stay like this.
