∞ 56: Campfire [action]

[A late day finishing up study along the barrier has led to the traveling trio of Albert, Raine, and Genis setting up camp very late in the day. The flickers of fire hovering around in the dark are not from torchlight, but Eferin's minor spirits providing the researchers with light to look around by.

Albert trudges by with a bundle of firewood, setting it next to the beginnings of a campfire. There's a lot to think about as they travel back.]

[Genis steps into the campfire's light and looks around, wondering why it's so quiet. He shrugs and heads over to the fire, looking for dinner that he may or may not have skipped.]

[Albert hasn't moved far away from the campfire. There's some food waiting in a mess kit; just sandwiches, nothing fancy.]

[Sandwiches seem to be an integral part of House 42's lives. He picks one up, sits across Albert, and looks around the campsite once more.]

Huh, where's Raine run off to...?

[Albert makes the effort to glance around before speaking.] She went to take a walk.

She did? Huh, did she say where she was going?

No, she didn't. But I trust she won't go too far from here.

Did something happen that you needed to speak to her?

Well, not really. Just wondering where she's disappeared to, and if she skipped dinner, since she tends to forget.

...She hasn't had dinner yet. She'll have to be reminded when she returns.

[He sighs] Right. I'll do that.

[Looks at Albert curiously] So what're you up to?

[He looks wryly at Genis.] Waiting for her to come back, really.

[Finishing off a sandwich] Hmm? Did you guys fight or something?

I told her something she may not have wanted to hear. She must have decided she needed to think about a few things.

- So you did get into an argument? With Raine? Geez, I was just kidding-!

Hmm. She'll probably be back soon, though.

We argue often. These arguments just usually don't end with us not speaking to each other.

Oh. Really?

Eh, it'll be fine as long as you didn't say anything that would get her too ticked off. I guess.

She wasn't particularly angry when she left.

I told her that I would rather not go out to the desert ruins because I didn't want to see her in her ruin mania.

[Pfft. Genis tries not to laugh, so he settles for an amused grin.]

Heh, well, I don't blame you for saying that. Though I can't blame her for running off, either.

But - she's going to the ruins?

[Albert finds himself rubbing at one of his temples as he recalls the conversation. He had decided it was really quite ridiculous after sitting there for awhile.]

It was rather hypothetical; if a trip to the ruins is planned, it wouldn't be for awhile. So the entire argument was ... well, useless.

Sure sounds like it. [Genis laughs a little at that. Why so fail, both of you?]

Not sure she'd like it if you told her that it was useless of her to run off like that, though. Even if it was.

I don't intend to bring it up unless she does. She may have had another reason for retreating when she did, after all. [It's unlikely, but he leaves the idea open.]

...She isn't used to being confronted, is she?

Mm, I guess that could be possible. [He shrugs] We'll just have to wait 'til she gets back, then.

... No, no she isn't.
