∞ 79: A post-battle report [written]

Everyone drafted out to Desset City should be accounted for by now. My gratitude to those who successfully worked together while we were out there.

I am sure there are residents and recent arrivals who may have questions about the situation and what we encountered out there. As longer-term residents may remember, we first encountered an army of cultists last autumn -- these cultists are referred to as the Third Party. The members of the Third Party, unlike us, have the ability to fly and Shift their surroundings. The scientists keeping us in this barrier, the Malnosso, drafted several of us to head out to another settlement.

We have been told that Desset City, the location we were sent to, was one of several settlements outside of our village. It was unlike anything seen within our barrier prison. The troops we met were an occupational force, maintaining patrols and one major base of operations that became apparent towards the end of our campaign. Despite the Third Party having a greater number of troops, we prevailed. The arrival of electricity and appliances coincide with our successful return.

Of note is the fact that draftees who initially refused were dragged by force onto the battlefield. These reluctant draftees were given less time to prepare, and included the likes of children. If you are drafted in the future, be aware that refusal does not appear to be a valid option. You will be taken and put to work, or you will be killed out there.

The New Feather cycle should begin shortly, so everyone should be on alert and maintaining their patrol schedules. This is especially important with the heightened amount of conflict in Luceti. Patrols should be properly equipped for skirmishes by now, so I'll forgo any other needless reminders.

Unless you can sleep through the noise. But I wouldn't recommend it. [Albert stands and brushes at his pants.]

You should move to your bedroom if you want to finish your nap.

[It's just conversation. But she blinks a little at him. Hadn't they just established that the dryer was too loud?]

I should probably stay up, if I'm going to get to school on time today. [There's the faint hint of doubt in those words.]

You intend to go to the school today?

It is a school day, the last one before the weekend. My lesson plans have been thrown off schedule enough as it is.

Then you should consider getting ready and heading over so you can rest over at the schoolhouse. [He doesn't believe you look awake enough to last through lessons.]

... Then I'll take a shower, first. [She hopes that will help.]

[Albert nods, moving to exit the bathroom.] I won't keep you waiting, then.

... I won't be long. [At least, she shouldn't be. It's just a shower, what could go wrong?]

[He nods once more, stepping into the hallway and heading back to his bedroom. That should be that.]

[After all, it seems rather straightforward. She waits until he has left the room before undressing, setting her clothes on the floor.

First the water is too hot. She frowns, but waits a moment so it doesn't scald her. Eventually it evens out to a more practical temperature. Still warm, but not ridiculously so -

And then the heat cuts out entirely, mid lather. Well then, fine. She'll have a cold shower then. It wouldn't be unlike getting caught in the rain the night before. That was a nuisance. She finishes up as quickly as she can, turning off the water, reaching for a towel - and of course there's only one left, and it's one of the smaller ones. She stands there damp and dripping, trying to make the best of it, as her eyes fall on the still loud and turning dryer. Maybe there was something usable in there?

She walks over to the machine, opening the door to check, which thankfully halts the sound as well. Hm... no luck, and the clothes inside weren't even dry.]

[This all takes longer than usual for one of Raine's showers, and it's hard not to notice -- especially when the matter of being late for school was a possibility.

...He'll give her another minute or two before checking on her.]

[Raine's now effectively mentally kicking herself for not checking for any of this beforehand. But she can be rational about this; it can't really get much worse. Her hair and wings are still dripping, which doesn't help her attempts at drying herself off. There's the idea of just trying to run to her room, but it's at the wrong end of the hallway.

She turns the dryer back on, anyway, as she shivers.]

[When Albert hears the dryer being turned back on, that is enough to get him out of his seat and heading back into the hallway. After all, if the dryer wasn't finished, why had it been shut off for a few moments?

He knocks on the door.] Is everything all right in there?

[She's right next to the dryer, so she can barely hear the knock, let alone his question. Which probably means that her response will be just as inaudible.]

What? I just need a few minutes.

[The only portion of the sentence he was able to hear was the very end, unfortunately.]

It's already been more than a few minutes. And I heard the dryer shut off.

[Bits and pieces of that one.]

Do you want me to shut it off again?

[...He contemplates that question, since he was able to get the gist of what she was asking.]

No, it's fine. The clothes are probably not done drying yet. ["Probably."]

[It probably would make this talking through the door thing easier though.]

They weren't before.

[And then she sneezes.]

[...Did she just sneeze?]

Cold?

Just a bit. I'll be fine in a minute. [She tries to adjust the towel again. Still damp.]

Perhaps you shouldn't go to school, if you're getting sick.

[Well she heard the last part.]

I'm not getting sick, Albert.
