∞ 84: Solace from time's passage [action/written]

[Today Albert is in the sitting room of his house, leafing through a few books idly. The weather is disappointingly rainy for summer, but it's a pleasant change from the heat earlier in the week.

Eventually, he will fall asleep on the couch. It was just supposed to be a nap -- half an hour at most. But that half an hour turns into a whole hour. And then two. (This may even repeat in his bedroom later on.)

Sometime later in the evening, he will write in his journal.]

Accomplishments could be said to be life's milestones. Some are far apart, and others are so close together that they may very well overlap. Some may be considered mundane, and others utterly unique to your circumstances.

If you are willing, I would like to hear of a mundane accomplishment. Something that others could relate to. I will share one of my own: I graduated from school as a teenager.

Most. [Why do you give him so many openings, Caesar?] That could very well get you in trouble someday.

Yes, yes. Someday. [Which obviously means not today. He's been standing long enough, so he goes and sits on the opposite end of the bed.] So, have any interesting dreams? [It's obvious that he's teasing when he says it, but now that he thinks about it... huh. What kinds of things would Albert dream of, anyway?]

Interesting? Hardly. [He frowns, glancing at Caesar as he sits down on his bed. Again uninvited. You really do enjoy making yourself comfortable, little brother.] Soothing, perhaps. I can't say I usually have dreams so distinctly comforting.

[Caesar notices, but he ignores it. Better get used to it, big brother.] Soothing, huh? You're right, maybe this is a problem.

Indeed. Perhaps I will enjoy the dreams so much that I won't want to wake up.

Are you trying to tell me something? [He shakes his head.] I'm glad you're having nice dreams and all, but I can't let you sleep forever.

[He snorts, shaking his head at Caesar's expression.] Of course not. Someone needs to be around to fill in the holes in your plans.

Yeah, lucky you. And I won't have anyone's plans to ruin if you're too busy dreaming. How boring would that be?

[dryly] You would lose all purpose in life. Then you might as well sleep forever as well.

But one would have to wonder what you would dream about.

M-me? [Err...] Well, as you can imagine, I dream about lots of things. That's nothing new.

Perhaps you dream of yourself sleeping, who in turn dreams of himself sleeping.

[...what. Caesar raises an eyebrow at him.]

Huh? Not even close. Who even dreams of things like that?

Someone who does nothing but sleep, obviously. [Is he being serious?]

Do you even know what you're talking about? [Well, no, obviously, but.] I'm ashamed to say my dreams have been nowhere near as peaceful lately. But I guess if you can dream of such soothing things, then perhaps I can, too.

[He speaks flatly, ignoring the question that was asked.] Are you really trying to compete over soothing dreams, Caesar?

...what? [He has to be joking. And if that's true... He tilts his head.] N-no one said anything about a competition! Albert, I think you slept too well.

[Albert laughs. It's brief, but the looks Caesar keeps shooting him are amusing.] Perhaps. But I can't say I didn't appreciate it.

[Caesar shakes his head. The first time he laughs in who knows how long and it's at his expense. Of course. But he isn't ~~too~~ bothered by this.] Might as well enjoy it while you can, right?

What did you dream about, anyway?

[He raises a brow at the question.] So curious about what I was dreaming about. What if I told you there was nothing memorable about it?

That would be boring. [He frowns a little. There was no point in pretending he wasn't curious.] I just wondered what you'd find so comforting in a dream that you wouldn't want to wake up from it.

Hmm. [He doesn't answer right away. There was no harm in letting him know. He had just been evasive to see how Caesar would react.] I was dreaming of a long journey. The journey of one's life.

[Caesar, on the other hand, didn't think Albert would actually tell him anything, so there's a noticeable look of surprise on his face before he speaks.] Uh... I guess things were going pretty well, huh?

[You guess? Albert will refrain from focusing on your stupid questions, Caesar.] It wasn't overwhelming, looking at how much time I have left.

Oh? [There was definitely something relieving about that.] That's good to hear. That's the way it should be. Otherwise, that dream of yours might have been more of a nightmare.

Indeed. That in itself was surprising.
