Welcome to all the New Feathers of this cycle. I am sure that residents, especially the volunteers working in the Welcome Center, have been helpful as you adjust to your surroundings.

Some may have noticed that there are stations some distance away from the village -- watch stations where New Feathers may find clothing or shelter. Residents may also use them as stopping points as they explore the surrounding forests and plains. They are maintained by a group of volunteers, which has been without a head organizer for a few months now. If anyone is interested in taking on this responsibility, please speak with me, Albert Silverberg.

Recent additions to the enclosure are the expansive farmlands to the northeast of the village. There are numbers of farm animals and growing crops up there that are in need of caretaking. While the village has the grocery store for easy access to food, I am sure some would relish opportunity to work with crops and animals.

If there are any questions about these subjects, they may be asked here. Thank you.

[Around noon, Albert may be found in the clothing store, looking for clothing for warmer weather. Maybe he'll attempt to tan this year. It's been awhile.

Later in the day, he will be in the stables tending to his horse. He will be out there for several hours before retiring for the evening to the house, reading a "Computers for Seniors for Dummies" book. Very funny, Bil.]

I do wonder if he will manage to deliver it, in his current location. It's been awhile since we spoke, and a computer seems more difficult than some smaller trinket.

[It's a good thing he really has no idea what to do with it.]

I'm sure he'll find a way, if he said he was still taking requests. It might be interesting having the extra technology around, if we can put it to good use.

By your tone, it sounds as if you already have ideas.

Not in particular, though I'd have to study more about the practical applications of the system to be certain. [She shrugs a little, distributing the orange slices and then moving to clean up the mess.]

"Practical applications"?

Anything that it might be useful for, perhaps for the school or having another place to store records.

Then I suppose you will want the computer? [He almost sounds amused, but not quite.]

I don't want one enough to ask for it personally. [ She picks up an orange slice. ] I was only saying that if you were to get one, it might be interesting to see what it could be used for.

Then you are speaking in hypotheticals.

Well, you did say that it wasn't something definite. Although it does make me wonder.

[He simply raises a brow silently, picking at the fruit.]

[ What is with those strange expressions. She'll just eat a bit for now. ]

[After eating another piece of fruit, Albert picks up the book again and tucks it under his arm. Balancing his glass of wine and the bowl of fruit, he turns to leave.]

In any case, thank you for the dessert. I'm going to go read in a more comfortable chair.

[She just takes a seat at the island, looking down at the bowl thoughtfully before she starts eating. It really was for an attempt to relax, but. There's always something to think about.]

[It'll be another 20 minutes or so before Albert returns, having finished the fruit and found a decent place to bookmark in the book. He's again carrying his wine glass, bowl, and book, and he nods in greeting when he sees Raine.]

[Raine has since finished up her fruit, having washed up her bowl already, but she's sitting down flipping through a cookbook when Albert reenters, with some index cards next to her. She lifts her head after hearing his footsteps, returning the nod.] Had a good read?

I suppose. The more I read, the more apparent there are a lot of ... features that likely wouldn't be accessible here. [He sets the book and his wine glass down, heading over to the sink with his bowl.]

I suppose that's to be expected. They'd hardly provide something that would mirror their own levels of technology. Was there anything you found interesting, or useful?

References to organizing files and folders and sizes of files on the actual computer. Interacting with other machines with the computer -- a scanner, a printer, a fax machine. [The first two machines, he had an idea of what they were by the name alone. But a fax machine?]

Oh? Does it go into detail about those processes? [Not that she can confess to being too familiar with what ordinary personal computers do, but she could probably hack them given the opportunity.] ... Although, you've lost me at "fax machine".

Mostly connecting the two machines, installing software and drivers... [Whatever those were.] There seemed to be an implication that the reader knows what a "phone" is while working with the fax machine. Making "phone calls" to another fax machine.

My students have made references to phones before-- they're called telephones. They function like the journals in some way-- voice contact over long distances.

I see. I presume it is stationary in some way, since there was cord mentioned in the instructions. A paper can apparently be copied and sent through the fax machine. The term "fax" is new to me, though.
